could we get a little variety?

People submit to BA from various backgrounds and for a variety of reasons, we don't put a call out for contributors of specific ethnicity.

Sorry to hear that, but I have no control over who chooses to contribute to Agony, people of all shapes, sizes, gender & ethnicity are always welcome. I feel privileged to have had so many contributors wanting to share themselves with us & am always eager to see what may be turning up for me to look at next.

It's a valid criticism that the website is overwhelmingly white. We can't deny that, but I think it's also difficult for us to assume all responsibility for it. One thing about that whiteness is that it's self-perpetuating; because Agony participants are self-selected and because they see the website before they choose to contribute, folks who see themselves represented on the site are perhaps more likely to participate. If you're a person of colour (it's not just a question of women, switch) and you come here and see a sea of white faces, you're not necessarily going to feel drawn to the project or like you belong there. Then again, if you actually took the time to look at what we're about and consider that carefully, you might consider the fact that there aren't that many people of colour representing themselves here and maybe you'd consider being one in hopes that it might bring others to do the same thing. I don't think people of colour should have to fight to be seen on websites like this, and with Agony, they wouldn't - we will take any usable submission from any person, anywhere.
The only other thing I can think of to solve this problem would be to recruit the demographics which aren't already represented on the site. I am uncertain of the ethics of this. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on that, switch - you've identified a problem, maybe you can offer some ideas on how to solve it?
