Download outside the browser

Is there a way to download outside the browser?  I like to batch up downloads overnight or run them on another machine via an SSH session.  Including my user/pass in the URL I hand to curl hasn't worked.  i.e.:

curl -f -O "http://username:password@www.beautifulagony.com/blah/blah/vid.mov"

gets me a "You're not allowed" message.

It seems I used to be able to do this [I got 001-311 via curl] but no longer can.

Any officially supported way to do this?  Thanks.
