Why so frequent piercings..?

Hello everybody, somebody can light my lantern, I noted on performers an  exceptionally high number  of piercings and quite specially on the tongue... It appears to be a bias of selection and I wondered  if either many performers are recruited in definite social circles and if it is the case, which in particular, or if it is a cultural phenomenon, if the piercing is more common in regions where from most of the participants come from - because it is quite rare in my region of Latin Europe. Being academic lecturer, I think that among my students I may have seen all in all less than ten those piercings in the last ten years... Thanks, folks and have plenty of good time!
